A Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA) is one of the easiest forms of planned-giving. A CGA is a life income gift, of either cash, securities or real estate, between you and a charity. In exchange for the gift to the charity, you, or a beneficiary, are promised a specified lifetime income, which is equal to a fixed percentage of the original gift. This percentage is dependent upon the age of the beneficiary, the rate of return the charity expects to earn, the amount of the gift and whether the payments will begin immediately, or be deferred until a later time. If you are married, the life income can be shared as a full joint-and-survivor option to you and your spouse. At the death of the last surviving beneficiary, the charity will use any remaining annuity assets to support its ministry.
In addition, there are several tax benefits to using a CGA. Regardless of your age or when income payments begin, you can deduct a portion of the gift in the year in which you gave it. Further, a portion of the income payments you receive each year may also be exempt from certain income taxes. Finally, if you donate long-term appreciated securities, you may even be able to reduce your capital gains tax.
